PleaseRobMe.com exposes dangers of TMI in social media
PleaseRobMe.com scrutinizes players of online game Foursquare, which is based on a person's location in the real world. PleaseRobMe extracts information from players who have chosen to post their whereabouts automatically onto Twitter.
Apps like Four Square are growing in number and many people don’t realize they are publishing the location of their empty homes online. What’s more they are publishing the addresses of the friends they visit online each time they update their status.
"We saw people 'checking in' at their home addresses, or even worse, those of their friends and family," Von Amstel says. "Which we just thought was very wrong."
If you are using these apps, make sure not to automatically post your location to twitter. But if you must - make sure your “I’m not at home” postings always end with “but my burglar alarm is.”
