Summer in the City: San Francisco's Do-It-Yourself Beach
Leave it to the creative people of San Fran to make a hot sunny day even better by making their very own beach at Dolores Park. Last summer I traveled to San Fran to visit my friend Tamara Larson and Harald Boyesen, of Blenka, both very cool creators of damn cool music and graphically creative geniuses.
During my visit, I was thrilled when Tamara told me we were going to the beach. My swimsuit and flip-flops were in hand in seconds. I was a bit surprised when the car stopped at Dolores Park. I was then informed that Dolores Park has forever been known as “the beach.” Beautiful people gather there on San Fran’s rare hot sunny days and lay out in bikini’s and spanks and get sweaty and tan.
The memories all came back when, I saw these pics posted on facebook by my friend, Emilie Raguso, multi-media reporter extraordinaire.
A whole lot of plastic sheeting, water, a kiddie float or 2 and a great deal of community brings us this whimsical sight: a slip-n-slide beach for grown-ups. As a registered super fan of all things do-it-yourself, it’s exciting to see folks slipping and sliding with the largest grins in triumph at their keepin-it-cool success.
I’m heading out to San Fran later this month and I hope against hope that’ll I get to see this sort of thing in person. If so I’ll slip on down the grassy knoll and pop the pictures up here.
