Buy now or wait

I installed SimpliSafe in October. My son looked at it, researched it, and loved it. But he decided to wait for the upgraded system. I have tried to convince him to just get the basic system now with entry sensors for his doors and then tweak it later on when the upgrade is released. But he decided to wait. Then, this past week, a house in his neighborhood was broken into. On Thursday he ordered SimpliSafe. Friday night, two days before Christmas, his house was broken into. Point of entry was a patio door. He was away at a Christmas party. All of his Christmas presents under the tree were taken along with many other items. Needless to say he is kicking himself for waiting. The purpose of this posting is to give some food for thought to anyone who is on the fence trying to decide whether to buy now or wait.

This is the Season for

This is the Season for burglaries, however, I am waiting for the new system, why buy a base station that you will not need when the one comes out that you want. Also, your sky is falling warning is a bit much. People should get an alarm system that they want, not one that they do not because of panic.

People who buy the old base

People who buy the old base station now will not be stuck with it when the new one is available. They will just trade it in and pay the difference in price. I faced this same question last summer, when the new base station was expected to be available in September. I installed a basic system and plan to upgrade it whenever the new base and sensors become available. Buy the system when you decide that you need it. If you want protection now, there is little to be gained by waiting.

I would have to disagree.

I would have to disagree. Yes, you can upgrade the new base system but there has been no informaiton released on the actual design (color, size) of new sensors. Color, size and appearance are all factors and, I would think, the new sensors will be much smaller in size due to technology improvements and therefore less noticeable. As with any new system, compatability is almost always an issue. I am lucky as my current provider's contract ends in early April so I can wait.

That is a terrible story.

That is a terrible story. I'll bet you are kicking yourself for not just buying the base system for your son when he was unsure.
I agree, just the base system alone is a solid unit even if you decide to upgrade later or not.

Can someone from Simplisafe

Can someone from Simplisafe confirm that the new sensors (entry) will indeed be a smaller form factor than the existing one?
