What happens if burglar destroys keypad?
Posted March 11th, 2011 by cpbarnette
I am interested in buying SimpliSafe, but I am concerned about what would happen if an intruder broke the keypad. Would this alert the call center?
Also, what about the batteries in the different units - my wife asked me "well, what happens if we go on vacation and the batteries run out while we are gone"
Thanks for your help.

Since there's no answer in a few days to this question, I guess I'll take it.
The keypad in this system is separate from the base. The base is what contains the electronics that contact the monitoring center (EDS,) and it also contains the primary alarm sounder. So if a burglar destroys the keypad, it doesn't matter. The base will still alarm and contact the monitoring center (EDS) once the time delay runs out. (The default is 30 seconds after any sensor trips, but is adjustable for less time.) If you want, you can hide the base in a corner or behind something.
The separation of the base and keypad is one of the many reasons I purchased SimpliSafe.
As for the batteries, you get a notification on the keypad in advance telling you that a sensor has a low battery. Keep in mind though, these batteries are rated for years! Don't worry. A low or dead battery in a sensor won't just set off the alarm or anything. The base unit plugs into an outlet and has its' own rechargeable battery backup in case of a power outage, so no worries with the base. My suggestion would be, if you know you haven't changed the batteries in all the sensors in quite a while, and you're going on vacation for a really extended period of time, you might want to just go ahead and change them early. If nothing else, you'll get a little extra peace on mind.
My system should be here today! UPS says, "Out for Delivery"! Can't wait!
