Crash and Smash?
Posted January 4th, 2012 by alepage
This is a great product and service. Despite some technical problems which were easily corrected with help from the support line, I've gotten a more secure feeling about my security while I'm home and away. However does this system defeat the so call "crash and smash" technique I've read about? The intruder crashes through the door and smashes the keypad rendering it inoperable. Does the Simplisafe home base send an alarm if the keypad is destroyed anyway?
Thank you for your answer!

Thanks for posting! The base station will still send the signal even if the keypad is smashed! If the siren goes off, then the signal has been sent!

Can they damage the base to a point where the signal will not be sent? If they smash it with a hammer and the alarm doesnt go off will the signal be stopped?

Thanks for posting! The Base Station is only vulnerable during the entry delay time. The system has a default 30 second entry delay time (the time the system gives you to deactivate the alarm before the siren sounds). However, you can lower this time all the way down to 1 second and all the way up to 250 seconds using the Easy Setup Wizard!

This is actually a feature idea I've been thinking about since I got my system a few days ago - the base station could have an accelerometer in it, so that if any sudden movements to the base station are registered within the entry delay time, the call goes out and the sirens go off immediately. It would be pretty impressive to destroy the base station within the entry delay window without moving it. As SimpliSafe grows in popularity, the potential grows for a burglar to know to target the base station and not the keypad in a crash and smash situation if they see SimpliSafe stickers and signs on the property. The addition of something like this could completely prevent that.

I was thinking along the same
I was thinking along the same lines. Movement of the base causes immediate activation. Just hope it dials fast enough before it hits the floor!!!!! ;-)
I love my system and have it
I love my system and have it installed in my business(soon to be in my home too after the update is released) but I too have a lingering uneasiness. If the system is vulnerable during the entry delay window it seems to me if I was a burglar the first thing after hearing the dinging countdown would be to destroy the keypad. The base station is well hidden and it would take awhile to find it but the keypad is by the backdoor. I have the timer set to 10 seconds but can't go any lower due to giving other people without a remote the ability to enter their pin to disarm the system, even 10 seconds is pushing it. I would feel better knowing the base station was activated(and by that I don't mean an immediate alarm but it would have the ability to continue the countdown separate from the keypad) when the countdown started and only disarmed when I disarmed it by either the pin or remote and not by smashing the pad. What can I do other than hiding the keypad too which would never work because it needs to be easily accessed by me and others? Is this just a problem with this system and probably other one's too, that has no solution.

Thanks for posting! The keypad is not a vulnerable component and if it is disabled, it will have no effect on whether the Emergency signal is sent. This is why we have our keypad beep as a distraction! So if a burglar takes the time to destroy the keypad, they are wasting there time and once the Base Station siren sounds, the signal has been sent!

That's my question, will the base still have the alarm sound if the keypad is destroyed during the entry delay time?

@RyanK
Would I be correct in stating that once a sensor is activated, the keypad immediately sends the "begin countdown" to the siren and the siren is then an independent device unless it gets an "off" from the keypad (or keychain control)?

Thanks for posting! On the current Base, the siren is even more independent than what you state. It doesn't get a signal from the keypad, it listens for the signals between the keypad and base. So when the Base tells the keypad to start the countdown, the siren does the same, and when the keypad or keychain remote send the of signal, the siren picks that up and follows suit.
