Keychain Remote Cap
Posted August 6th, 2010 by rtravis
So just after a few weeks I've lost the Keychain Remote Cap. I've had many USB thumb drives that I've never lost the cap for. It seems like it could be designed better to help prevent loss. Maybe a rubber seal or a rubber cap would be a better fit? And $4.99 for 10¢ worth of plastic is a bit outrageous. Your catalog description says it all "Now replacing your Keychain Remote's zipdrive cap is as easy as misplacing it was." So you acknowledge how easy they are to lose? I think I'll try to retrofit mine with something better.

Hi, Sorry to hear you lost
Hi,
Sorry to hear you lost your Keychain Remote Cap. Our comment in the catalog was just meant to be "tongue-in-cheek" amusing, we don't actually hear about them getting lost too often. But I'm happy to ask the development team do some testing and see if they need to be tightened up at all. We appreciate the feedback! I'll also ask customer support to contact you about a replacement.

Since i got my system i have taken mine everywhere. In fact, its tied onto my key chain which hangs off my belt clip. Never has fallen off, its been over a week now i'm walking around with it like that and it has never fallen. If you lost the cap, its probably your own fault (no offense). And while $5 may be expensive for a cap, i don't think the good people at Simplisafe built such a great system just to rip you off on plastic caps.

Quick update -- we've lowered the Keychain Remote Cap price to $1.99 and are looking to add a less expensive shipping option (likely USPS First Class mail) in the next month or so for these lightweight purchases to try to make this more affordable for everyone.

Also....
the buttons, on the keychain remote / usb flashdrive, should be covered.
A Question for DAVE & READERS:
Could you amagine, pressing the off / panic button without knowing, when you just knew for sure that you armed the alarm....
after you left your location, only to return.... and find nothing left of your belongings due too human error?
THAT WOULD SUCK!!!!!
(SIMPLISAFE DEVELOPERS: WILL YALL DEVELOPE A REMOTE CASE?)
I'm a recent simplisafe
I'm a recent simplisafe adoptee.....and I also happen to be an industrial designer. My thoughts on the revision of the ideal keychain would be to make the clam shell casing out of metal, probably aluminum with a phenolic resin (or cast PVC) end for the radio waves to pass with simple 'loop' for the keyring. A water-tight silicone membrane adhered to the inner shell for the buttons, recessed the same way. The USB end could be a threaded cap (resin or metal) with an O-ring, that would lock the piece on and also be water-tight.
Of course, the cost would rise a bit, but this is very do-able with rather inexpensive materials too. To me, the Simplisafe system is an appliance that potentially moves with homeowner; legacy and longevity is the thing that will keep a loyal customer base.
The Simplisafe system concept is genius, and will be the future of all home security systems in a few years. I really like the system and it has helped me sleep a little better knowing my little ones have an electronic guardian around them at night.
I do not like the USB
I do not like the USB keychain at all. It is big and clunky. And due to an odd setup issue, I've now had three keychains. First two, lost the cap several times in the first week of carrying on key chain. Fo rtunately found it each time. All of them had 'cap fall off' issues.
Could keep it USB, make cap stay on -- but use the shorter, smaller USB jump drives? Or give me a normal key fob with just the necessary 3 buttons? I had Brinks years ago, and sorry to say...their key fob...way better than the USB stick.
Other than this, good product. But my USB key is retired to a drawer in the house. I use the keypad only. The cap that will fall off, and the sheer bulk of it...makes it a looser. Plus, why would I carry around my entire alarm settings on my keychain? That is just a bad idea. If my keys were lost/stolen...it wouldn't take long to hack.
This seems to be the place to
This seems to be the place to talk about the keychain remote so I have something that has been on my mind:
This is just my opinion but I don't think it is a good idea to really carry the keychain remote on my keys. This comes from reading about and hearing all kinds of horror stories from people that have been robbed because keys were copied or garage door openers were copied/stolen and that allowed burglars to walk right into their homes. I just think that I would be more comfortable keeping my keys and the remote control to my alarm system as separate as possible.
My system will likely arrive tomorrow (I am excited to probably the 10th power!) and I plan on using the software in the remote to customize my system and will lock it in the safe (or maybe hide it somewhere in the apartment to take advantage of the panic button if that was ever necessary). I will use the keypad to arm and disarm the system.
Does anyone think I am being too cautious or have I raised a good point here?
Thanks!
Antney
@Aunt Spray Great ideas!

Great ideas! Thanks for posting!
@kor1224
Thanks for posting, and the great ideas! The keychain can only be accessed with your Master PIN and the system only gives you ten tries. It's hard to hit a 1 in 10,000 chance with just ten tries!
@Antney
Great points! We have planned for such events as we understand things such as keychain remotes can be lost or stolen. If you ever realize this has happened, you can easily remove the keychain remote from your system and it will cease to operate on your system and useless to anyone who may have picked it up.

id keep the remote in your car, next to your garage door opener..that way someone breaks into your car, they steal your registration, your remote, AND the garage door opener....they walk right in! thats way better than taking the risk of losing the cap right?? HAHAHAHAHAHA
