annoyed
It seems kinda quiet around here, so I thought I'd break the ice. My apt was broken into last month and yes, it really sucked. I don't think I felt "violated" like a lot people say, as much as I just feel annoyed. The creep pried open my back door and took my laptop and a bunch of other stuff. It was losing the laptop that made the whole thing so annoying - I lost a ton of work on my thesis. In fact, I'm partially venting my frustration here because I'm procrastinating getting back to work on it.
Anyway, it feels good to be doing something about it. I'm getting my alarm system soon hopefully, looking into renters insurance, and my landlord might put bars on the windows. Any other tips? Thanks for listening...
Sara, I'm so sorry to hear
Sara, I'm so sorry to hear about your break-in. That does sound quite annoying. I had a similar experience in December when my computer was stolen just before Christmas. Pretty rotten, eh? I think you'll really like your Simplisafe system, it certainly makes me feel a lot better!
Also, I hate to make an annoying comment, but you should of course backup your data. I now use an online backup service so that I never forget about it. Try searching for Carbonite, Mozy, or if you're more technically inclined Jungledisk (which is what I use). Any one of them will backup your files over the internet.
Hope you're feeling better and thanks for sharing your story.

Thanks for the sympathy. as
Thanks for the sympathy. as for your "annoying" tip, yes, I have been hearing that from everyone!! I am looking at the online backup programs now, i had never heard of that before. Seems like a good idea.
Sara: Ditto, kid. PO'd me to
Sara: Ditto, kid. PO'd me to no end coming home on a Friday and my apartment door ajar... stuff all over the floor. I did feel violated. Then it dawned on me, my stuff was gone. Yes, they got my laptop too. ///////////////// So I "fixed" the window-they-opened-with-tire-irons. The way I fixed it, it will not open any time soon, I shimmed the sides so they would likely have to break the window to get in. But I didn't stop there. I double-screwed all the windows shut. Then I bought an alarm system... an expanded system with a motion sensor for each room and four entry sensors, one for the door and three for windows. Do i feel safe? No. Not yet. There are still five windows without sensors. So I made up my mind, I am going to order them today as soon as SS verifies they can be added.
Be safe.

In addition to the
In addition to the SimpliSafe system, for your laptop you could look into lojackforlaptops.com
It's the service I use. In the event it's stolen, you can notify the Lojack team and they'll start tracking it (once it next connects to the Internet) and notify the police in the appropriate jurisdiction to it's location. Couldn't hurt!
