Bars on windows?

Okay safety gurus, quick question: my apartment was broken into last month and my landlord has agreed to step up the security measures, thankfully. She's replaced the locks on the doors and even offered to put bars on our ground floor windows. While I appreciate her willingness to invest (I'm sure that will cost a lot!) I'm not sure if I really want them. I just hate the idea of looking out the window through bars.

I've just ordered a simplisafe system and am looking forward to getting that in. Other than that, it'll be just me and the locks on the doors. What's the consensus? Are bars the best security measure and should I just deal with it? or do you think getting the alarm will do it?

Thanks everyone!

I'm with you, I hate the

I'm with you, I hate the look of bars on windows. But I think this is a very situation-specific and personal question, that can't really be answered easily. I'm sure bars can be a great deterrent. In your other post, though, you mentioned that the break-in happened through the back door, so you might ask yourself if bars on the windows would really help or not? I certainly can't answer that for you.

One other thing to consider is fire safety. Bars can block fire exits, so if your landlord installs them make sure they don't cut corners.

Hope that helps a little!

Thanks Gary. I'm holding off

Thanks Gary. I'm holding off on the bars for now. I'm feeling better with the steps I've taken so far and can't bring myself to "jail myself in" like that...
