Does anyone have any good recommendations for motion activated lighting? There's a small courtyard / garden area behind my apartment which is not very well lit at night. There is a fence, but it would be pretty easy to hop it and get to the fire escape. I figure that adding some better lighting would help improve our security, but am at a bit of a loss for how to do go about this... will I need an electrician to power? Has anyone else done anything like this?

It definitely sounds like
It definitely sounds like some more lighting would be a good idea there. If there's no power outlet nearby, and you don't want to call an electrician, you might want to try a solar powered motion activated light. We had one at one of my old apartments. It was kind of like this one:

thought not that exact version. It wasn't the brightest, but it got the job done well enough and didn't wake me up everytime a squirrel walked by :)
Let me know if you find something good that works for you. I might actually want to install something in my current place.
I have been looking for
I have been looking for something like this for a while now too, but haven't seen anything I liked. I just saw this on unplggd.com today and think I'm going to give it a try.

It sounds like the batteries will have to be replaced fairly regularly (6-12 months, depending on how much motion there is in the area, I guess) but it's cheap and easier the solar versions and I don't have AC power available, so it seems like a good option. I'll report back if I end up getting it.
@paulr, I like the look of
@paulr, I like the look of that battery powered one too. Did you ever try it out? How is it? Bright enough for outdoor use at night or just a hallway like that photo shows?
