Some Wireless Security Tips
Hi,
Just wanted to share some tips i've gotten doing research on home security, as well as taking to professionals in the security industry, and even ex burglars that are now turned around and educate others. If you have any questions you'd like to ask a security professional, ask me and i'll see if i can get you an answer :)
1) Don't advertise what alarm system you have. The Yardsign is a great idea, it tells thieves that your home is probably armed when your not home. But beyond that, it tells thieves exactly what kind of system you have to. If they know the brand of alarm you have, the easier it is to disable it because they know exactly what to look for. Instead, explain this to your neighbor/friend and consider trading alarm signs. The same goes for your vehicle, don't place stickers showing the brand of alarm, thieves will know how to disable it.
2) Change your locks to deadbolts and if possible, use a sliding chain lock to lock the door when inside. If someone comes to your door, always leave the chain lock on and open the door - if its someone who tries to enter by force the chain just might stop them from getting through - which gives you time to hit the panic button.
3) Check with your local Police Department to see if an alarm permit is required. In some cases, police will not respond to your home unless a permit has been fined. In other cases, they will respond but fine you for not having a permit - after which point you have to buy one anyways
4) Burglarize yourself. It sounds funny but it works. See if you can find a way into your house, because if you can, a thief can too. Looks for windows that might not be armed or maybe even how easy it is to get to your backdoor. (Don't do anything dangerous tho!)
5) Use timers to turn on your lights when your not home at night or if you live in a not so great area, maybe even while your sleeping. You might even want to have a radio on the timer to make noise to seem like someone is home while your gone. If you worried about electricity, you can often find LED light bars that can be placed near windows - they use very little energy, emit almost no heat and from the outside it looks like the light is on.
6) Use a small pipe (metal or solid wood) in the bottom track of any sliding doors you may have to the outside. This way, the door cannot be forcibly opened. Measure the pipe to be long enough to be able to stop the door from opening it far enough for someone to get in, but short enough to allow the door to open and set off the sensor to trigger the alarm if the door was attempted to be opened. (you may want to move your sensor right to the corner above the lock to decrease the distance the sensor needs to trigger)
7) Don't keep your keys close to the door. If a thief does get in and leaves really quick because of the alarm, they just might takes your keys with you. After all, it might have a key to locks on your house and maybe even your car.
8) Light up your backyard and front yard nicely at night. Using LED's (some can even be solar powered) means the cost is very minimal and your house looks well lit. A well lit house is not inviting at all to thieves, the last thing they want is to be seen.
9) Use a home safe. Put anything and everything valuable that you don't need out in it. A thief isn't going to spend time trying to break into it when the alarm is counting down and they are not going to try and take it either since most are usually very heavy and bulky.
10) Don't use cheap camera's around your home. Thieves know what a real CCTV camera looks like and what a fake one looks like. If they know its fake, they won't feel threatened at all
