Moving is chaotic. There’s a lot to get done. A lot to organize. And on top of that, thieves take advantage of movers. Nothing says “Valuables in here!” like a big moving truck. So if you’re moving soon, here are some helpful tips you can use to protect and keep track of all of your things. And be sure to give SimpliSafe a call to let us know if you're moving at 1 (888) 692-0229

How to protect valuables when moving

The best advice is to keep your valuables with you during the moving process. This way, they are always nearby and in your care. Here are some things that should go with you:

  • Birth certificates, passports, and other forms of ID
  • Medications (stored in a child-proof case)
  • Valued pieces of jewelry
  • One-of-a-kind pieces of artwork
  • Antiques
  • Photos
  • Sentimental Items
  • Electronics that have high resale value (smartphones, laptops, video game consoles)
  • Important documents

Large electronics like TVs can go with the mover if there isn’t enough room in the car. But be sure to keep an inventory of everything that goes with the movers.

A few more tips

  • Use the original box for your valuable if you still have it.
  • Take extra precaution when packing your valuables. You can never use too much packing paper!
  • Check with your home insurance agent to see if your valuables are insured while in transit (with you or with the moving company).
  • When traveling with your valuables, keep them hidden, especially when you stop for meals, snacks, or bathroom breaks.
  • Take photos and videos of your valuables before you move. If they are lost or stolen, a recent photo can be helpful in getting them back.
  • Get your valuables appraised to determine their true value.
  • Keep an inventory of all your valuables so you can quickly identify if one is missing.
