Questions and Answers:

  • Can I use SimpliSafe without activating the SimpliSafe Emergency Dispatch Service?
Yes, but we don’t recommend it. Without the Emergency Dispatch Service, only the burglar alarm siren will sound and no authorities will be called. The SimpliSafe Emergency Dispatch Service is easy to set up, can be charged to your credit or debit card, and canceled at any time.
  • Can I customize my system so that certain sensors are enabled or disabled?

To customize the sensors for your wireless security system, simply insert your Keychain Remote into any computer to start the SimpliSafe Easy Setup Wizard. From the Main Menu, select "Adjust Settings". Then click on the "Manage Components" tab.

From here, you can not only add and remove components, but you can also designate when a sensor will be active.  Entry Sensors can be enabled or disabled.  Motion Sensors can be enabled during both Home and Away mode, only during Away mode, or disabled.  Panic Buttons can be enabled, disabled or set to silent alarm.  Keypads and Keychain Remotes can be enabled, have the panic button disabled, or be fully disabled.

For example, if you have a friend with a large dog visiting your apartment for a few days, you may want to disable your Motion Sensor (set it to be "disabled") during her visit. When she leaves, you can change it back to the previous setting (the default is "Away mode"). If you have a large dog and will likely never be using the Motion Sensor at all, you can select "Remove" to remove it from your system. You can always add it on again later by going to Manage Components and then "Add Component".

Don't forget to insert your Keychain Remote into the Base Station after you are finished changing your settings so that your system is fully updated for the changes.

  • How do I order additional components for my System?

The additional DIY Security System components that you can order are: Keychain Remote, Extra Keypad, Motion Sensor, Entry Sensor, Panic Button, Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide Detector, Glassbreak Sensor, Water Sensor, and Freeze Sensor. Cameras will be available in the future. You can have up to 41 total components programmed into your system (note: the Base Station and additional Sirens are not considered components).

Click here to expand your system.
  • Do I need to have a computer or a wireless Internet connection to use SimpliSafe?
No. Everything you need to set up the SimpliSafe Home Security System is included. If you do have access to a computer, you will have access to additional features and settings, but it is not required. Just plug your Keychain Remote (which has a built in USB device) into a USB port of your computer and the SimpliSafe Easy Setup Wizard will launch and guide you through setting up and using your home security system.
  • I live on the ground floor and have a lot of windows. Will SimpliSafe work for me?
Absolutely. The Entry Sensors purchased with your do-it-yourself security system can be used to protect doors or windows. The Motion Sensor can be used to fill in coverage in a room with lots of windows. Plus, SimpliSafe was designed to be expandable - you can easily order extra Entry Sensors along with your system if there are additional windows that you’d like to protect. According to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, almost 80% of all home invasions occur through the front door, back door or a first floor window.
  • Is SimpliSafe right for me?

The SimpliSafe Home Security System is designed to work in homes of all sizes. The most basic SimpliSafe custom system is perfect for most 1-2 bedroom apartments. If you have a larger home or a lot of doors and windows (particularly on the ground floor), you can easily order additional components (such as door/window Entry Sensors and Motion Sensors) to supplement your system and provide additional coverage.

Roommates are no problem. You can order additional Keychain Remotes so that you each have your own. You can even each choose an individual PIN (up to 5 total) to use with the wireless Keypad.

Best of all, SimpliSafe is easy to install and easy to remove in case you move to a new home. The entire system can be taken down quickly and it’s easy to change your monitoring service to reflect your new location.

  • How do I install my SimpliSafe Original System?

It’s easy to install the SimpliSafe Original System. Check out this 5 minute long installation video to get started.

If you have our Interactive Monitoring plan ($24.99/month) you can customize your system settings online from your user account.

If you have our Basic Monitoring plan ($14.99/month) or have not activated monitoring just insert the Keychain Remote into one of your computer’s USB ports to launch the SimpliSafe Setup Wizard. No software will be installed on your computer. Just follow the onscreen instructions. If the welcome screen does not appear, open “My Computer” on your desktop and look for the “SimpliSafe” drive. On the drive, open the “SimpliSafe.exe” file.

If you don’t have access to a computer at home, just follow the instructions in the Owner’s Manual. You can always use the Setup Wizard to update your settings and use additional features in the future, just by inserting your Keychain Remote into any computer that you have access to.

  • Is SimpliSafe available in stores?

SimpliSafe is currently available in select retail locations, including Best Buy, Target, and Walmart stores across the country. Check your local store or call us at 1-800-548-9508 for a complete list of locations you can buy SimpliSafe.

  • Can an Intruder use a Magnet to disarm the Entry Sensor?

It would be very difficult for someone to disarm the system using a spare magnet. The Entry Sensor will be triggered as soon as the sensor and magnet are moved more than 2" away from each other. Theoretically, the intruder would have to know the exact placement of your Entry Sensor and be able to reach in while the door/window is open less than 2" inches. They would then have to hold their magnet up to the sensors while opening said door/window which would be very hard to do especially if you have your sensor placed high up on the door/window. We have actually had some of our Team Members as well as engineers who worked on the system attempt to do this and none were able to successfully accomplish this.

The best way to ensure that no intruder would ever be able to attempt this in your home is by placing the Entry Sensor at the top of your door/window instead of the side. In addition you can also place a Motion Sensor near said door/window for extra protection.

  • Can I turn the system on when my pets are home?
Yes, the Motion Sensors from the SimpliSafe Wireless Security System will generally not detect small pets (less than 30-50 pounds). If they are larger, your pet may set off the Motion Sensor and cause a false alarm. Even if they are smaller than 30 pounds, you must make sure that they cannot get within 2 feet of the Motion Sensor. Place the sensor high up (usually 5 feet works well) and away from anything your pets might climb on. If your pets walk in front of the Motion Sensor coming down stairs or walking on a table or bookcase, they may set the alarm off. It’s a good idea to test the system with your pet and confirm that your pet is small enough to be around the Motion Sensor. If you have a large pet, please contact customer support for assistance. We can help you position the sensor so as not to detect your pet or disable your Motion Sensor so that your pet can move around freely. More about Customizing Sensors.
